Shelf CC Press Release
The new cricket season commences in April, but Halifax League newcomers Shelf have got other things on their mind. Club legend Mick Priestley will be running the Flora London Marathon for the first time in 2007 – despite having never attempted such a distance before.
“Obviously I am completely mad,” the 55-year-old joked, “but I have done the Great North Run for the past three years."
Mick will not be running the 26 miles alone, however. He has managed to persuade several members of his family to join him in the capital city.
“There are six of us running the distance altogether, including my brother-in-law who also plays for Shelf.”
A club veteran, Mick has been at Shelf for 41 years and is relying on club members to help raise £1,500 for his chosen charity, St.Johns Ambulance.
“Fundraising is going really well,” he said.
"We are hoping every Shelf player will donate at least £10, which would be fantastic. “St.Johns is a charity close to my heart. I was a team member in my youth and the organisation really needs all the financial support it can get."
The marathon, which has become more of a celebration of sport in recent years, has been graced by a selection of odd costumes in recent years, but Mick is confident that a traditional running outfit will do.
“I don’t think we will be as noticeable as some of the other runners, but if the Shelf players contribute enough, I may wear my cricket whites!"
He has currently raised over £700 and those who want to sponsor Mick can do so at his website: www.justgiving.com/michaelpriestley.

Shelf Hits The Headlines ... for all the wrong reasons.

Below is an extract from the Halifax Evening Courier from Friday 7th July.
Thanks to Ben Holt, the Evening Courier reporter, for this report.

A STRUGGLING cricket club is being plagued by vandals.

Hooligans are making life hell by tearing down fences, wrecking buildings and super-gluing locks at the Shelf amateur club, which has been improving the ground in a bid to join the Halifax League.

Club member Jack Wilson said: "We get up to 50 kids up their in the evenings. We try to be nice by telling them it is private property but we allow them up there as long as they respect what we have done. "

"We are fighting a continual battle against these vandals. It is very frustrating."

Cricket club members have been trying to win a place in the Halifax League for years.

They were offered a place this season. But to secure the spot they had to improve their ground.

The dedicated group collected hundreds of pounds and convinced builders to donate their time to build a score box and security.

But each time work is finished the teenage tear-aways trash it over night.

Mr Morris said: "We were very excited to get into the league. But thanks to these vandals the league could turn round and say we have not done what we promised and throw us out. It is a worry."

Youngsters are invited to play with the junior teams every week.

"We think we are doing the community some good by looking after the kids. The ground is used four or five nights a week but it is in between times that we are finding the vandalism. It is a nightmare," Mr Morris said.

Police are looking into the nuisance.

A spokesman said: "A new construction, which has been built to house the score board at Shelf Cricket Club, has been damaged by vandals. "One wall has been completely destroyed and appears to have been pushed over and would probably have taken several people to do so. Cricket Club members have given their time on a voluntary basis, to build this structure and are rightly distressed at this act of wanton vandalism."
